My Mom is a lifelong Rod Stewarts fan, so as an early mother’s day gift, I decided to share with her his latest CD –“Time” his first album of new material in almost 20 years. She was more than eager to sit down with me and listen to it. This album marks his return to his songwriting roots and features 12 tracks, 11 of which he wrote and produced. The album was born from a burst of inspiration that came while Rod was reviewing his life for his recent memoir. Rod rediscovered his voice as a songwriter and rekindled his gift for writing the honest, nerve-touching narratives that have been the cornerstone to the first three decades of his career.

As we listen to the CD it was apparent to me why my mom loves him. The track started off great with “she makes me happy” a song that instantly puts a smile on both our faces.  It was a joy to hear my mom reminisce  about her first Rod Stewart’s experience, the excitement in her voice as she narrates the songs to me and the different shenanigans her and her friends use to get into.

Listening to the album, you can’t help but feel the sorrow in his voice on songs like – “Its Over” written about his divorce.  I have to admit, i was slightly uncomfortable hearing my mom hmm to the tunes of “Sexual Religion – “How do you do that thing you do to me, over and over again, I am addicted to your sexual religion”. Really though? No!!

I also enjoyed “Make Love To Me Tonight”, because it has a country vibe to it.  Overall, I love all the songs  but my absolute favorite track on the Time CD will have to be track # 12 – “Pure Love”, a song written by a father to his kids. The lyrics speaks to my heart in so many ways, as a mom of two – there’s a sense of pride that comes from seeing my kids grow up and watching them become young ladies.
