After a laid back summer, the thought of waking up super early, back to school schedule, after-school activities and endless homework seems daunting to me, not to mention how my girls are feeling. Whenever I mention the word school, I can see the look on my 5-year old’s face. She isn’t too thrilled. My 9-year old is anxious as she’s about to start 5th grade. This is why I’m trying to take every step to address their back to school jitters so I can make the transition easier on all of us. I won’t lie, part of me is excited to send them off to school, a chance to see them explore the world, learn new things, and make new friends but at the same time, I will miss our summer adventures. Here are some ways to ease back-to-school jitters for parents and kids alike:
Sure-Fire Ways To Ease Back-to-School Jitters
1. Get Organized and Establish a Routine.
To ease the children back into their regular school routine we establish a schedule everyone understands. The last few months, my girls have enjoyed staying up late, we didn’t enforce their school night bedtime; however, with school around the corner, it’s time to ease them back into their school night routine. I usually do a dry run, about a week or two before they head back to school, so everyone knows what’s expected and what our new school year schedule will entail.
2. Acknowledge It.
Sit down with your children and ask them why they’re anxious. I do this over breakfast; we love having the Jimmy Dean® Pancakes and Sausage and Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked Links & Patties. We talk about their fears and anxiety about the upcoming school year. It’s mostly the fear of the unknown. What they share often ranges from – would they get a good teacher, would they be in the same class with their friends, etc. I calm their nerves by assuring them that although they might have new people in their class, this is an excellent opportunity to make new friends. Thankfully, their school sends us a class roster a few weeks before school, so we try to set up some time to reconnect with friends from last year and meet some new friends before the school starts. I also remind them that they aren’t the only ones nervous about the new school year. Their teacher and friends are equally anxious.

3. Reminisce about Last Year.
To empower the girls, I let them know feeling anxious is normal. I remind them about their accomplishments from the previous school year. I remind them how nervous they were their first day and how they conquered it after that. We often look through their school album as a reminder of how much fun they will have. This usually puts them at ease and helps them feel confident that they can handle the upcoming new school year.
4. Refresh the Mind.
Since summer break often leads to learning loss. We often encourage the girls to do their daily summer reading and math package, science, etc. that way they feel prepared for the school year without feeling nervous about their academic abilities.
5. Review and Reinforce.
At the end of the day, ask your child how the day was and praise them for a job well done. Offer suggestions on items that need improvement, reinforce if needed and monitor as the year goes on.
This school year is a big milestone for us. My youngest is heading to first grade while my first born is entering fifth grade. So I understand if getting back into their school routine might take them some time. I am hoping that by keeping the line of communication open, it will help us back into the swing of things.
