Interview with Raymond Persi, The Voice of “Flash” the Sloth

Have you ever had a conversation with a sloth?  Well, I did and you can imagine, my blood pressure going up with every word out of his mouth. Seriously, sloths are known to be the slowest animal ever. If you’ve seen Disney’s Zootopia, then you probably remember the scene with Flash, the fastest sloth in the DMV (Department of Mammal Vehicles). I mean when I watched Zootopia, I didn’t think for one sec that I would ever get to meet “Flash” but to interview him.  Well, that’s exactly what I did. Yes, I sat down face to face with Raymond Persi, the voice of  “Flash” the Sloth.

Raymond S. Persi is a story artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios. He was part of the team that worked on movies such as Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” the Oscar®-winning animated feature, “Frozen,” as well as the Oscar-winning animated short, “Feast,”. As if he wasn’t already top notch, he directed the 2006 “Simpsons” Episode: “The Seemingly Neverending Story”, which won him an Emmy.

On voicing the most frustrating character EVER:
My goal when I did that scene was to make you feel like nails on a chalkboard. So thank you so much for letting me know that I did it right.

On how the role came about:
It was a character they wanted to try out. It was an idea for a scene; I think when Rich and Jim came on to the project, they were just trying to think of funny locations and animals.  Like animals in a nudist colony, that’s funny. Sloths running the DMV, that’s funny. A guy who’s like a mafia kingpin, but he’s a tiny little shrew, you know. So I think they hadn’t thought about it yet, and then that one just worked for them. Yeah.

It was such a joy to chat with the person behind the voice. However, talking to Flash himself, was as every bit frustrating as you saw on screen.  And, yes I had a video interview with Flash but it was beyond horrid, not his fault totally mine. I made weird faces, it was a disaster, so I will spare you the agony. It’s safe to say, I won’t be quitting my job to run to Hollywood anytime soon.

Disney’s Zootopia comes out on DVD/Blu-ray tomorrow, June 7th and seriously, pre-order it, so you can enjoy it for years to come.
