How to Get the Best Deals on Your Prescriptions

Has this ever happened to you? You walk into the pharmacy to pick up the prescription your doctor called in only to be told the insurance doesn’t cover it. Feeling defeated, you reluctantly pay it, a total sum of $300. As you drive home, you’re silently praying that this will be the last time you have to do this, but you know, based on your recent diagnosis, this will be the norm for the foreseeable future. Well, you’re not alone.

How I saved on my Prescriptions Medications using Optum Perks

Optum Perks sponsored this post, but the content and opinions expressed here are 100% my own.

If that story sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans are dealing with the burden of paying a considerable amount to cover their prescription medication. For various reasons – no insurance, insurance doesn’t cover the meds they want, or simply because even with insurance, the cost is still too high. No matter the reason, I’m happy to share a prescription discount app I recently discovered with you – Optum Perks Prescription Mobile App.

Optum Perks Prescription Mobile App is a free iOS or Andriod app that provides discounts on almost any FDA-approved medication. So if you find yourself without insurance, or maybe even after using insurance, your prescription continues to cost a lot, then you may want to check out Optum Perks. You can also use Optum Perks Prescription Mobile App if you have medications not covered by your insurance.

With the way the economy is, we’re all trying to save up as much as we can, and the fact that Optum Perks can save up to 80% off prescriptions intrigued me.

How I saved on my Prescriptions using Optum Perks

I take prescription meds every month, so when I found out there is a possibility that I can save a few dollars by using Optum Perks Mobile App, I had to give it a shot. I downloaded the Optum Perks Mobile App on Google Play and followed the prompt in setting up my account; the whole setup took less than 5 minutes, then voilà. It was time to check if it was worth the hassle. Once I downloaded the app, and I was able to use it in 3 easy steps –

Optum Perks App

  1. I clicked on the SEARCH bar and entered my prescription name, then pressed ENTER. Entered my preferred zip code. It populated different prices and the list of pharmacies that stock the meds and how far they are from my home.
  2. Once I FOUND it, I picked the pharmacy that worked best for me.
  3. Then I SAVED the coupon to my phone.

A few days later, I went to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription, and sure enough, the pharmacist didn’t hesitate to accept the coupon and ring me up.

Ka-Ching!! Did that happen? I walked away quickly because I couldn’t believe that I just saved on a medication that gave me so much grief. I think what surprised me was that the pharmacy didn’t hesitate to use the discount app. Don’t get me wrong, I was nervous walking up to him for fear that he might say no, or worse yet, the app won’t work, or they won’t honor the price offered on-screen, but thankfully it worked out in my favor. Overall, I can see how this will save me a lot more money in the long run. I’m looking forward to trying it out again; in two months, when my 90 days supply prescription expires, that will be the truest test of all.

The cool thing about the Optum Perks Mobile App is that it can be used at 64,000+ pharmacies nationwide, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and many more. Also, it’s not a special membership that you have to pay a fee for.

I have since shared the app with my cousin and my sister-in-law; I’m curious to see how she plans to use it and, most importantly, if it helps save her some money as she picks up medication for my mother-in-law.
