Patrick F. Healy Middle School Teachers Participated in Mobile Technology Workshop

Disclosure: I was invited as media to this event.

When Healy Middle School student returns to school in a few weeks, their teachers will be armed with countless new ways to leverage mobile devices to help them learn math and science concepts. On Friday (Aug 2), Healy Middle School teachers took part in a three-day, face-to-face training workshop to help them apply technology to support digital-age learning. They gained insights into the applications and tools they can readily use to interest, engage and help their students improve achievement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects.

Healy Middle School is one of 24 under-served schools across the country selected to help educators more effectively and innovatively use technology to enhance students learning STEM subjects. The Verizon Foundation, which provides funding through grants to ISTE and the participating schools, will increase its funding to $1.6 million to cover all the schools in the program.  More than 12,000 students will benefit from classroom environments that effectively integrate technology and exhibit NETS standards.

Verizon representatives presenting Dr. Monica Burton, Principal of Patrick J. Healy Middle School, with a $50,000 donation for mobile technology education.

“It is an honor and privilege to receive this Verizon grant of $50,000,” said Dr. Monica D. Burton.” Over this two year period, our teachers are going to receive intensive training on mobile learning which will enhance the student learning process by making the classroom more interactive. I’m looking forward to continuing this partnership with Verizon, going to training and being a part of additional virtual leaning opportunities.”

Students will use their devices to collaborate with their classmates, create videos that show their understandings (or misunderstandings) of concepts, and document the scientific and mathematical world outside their classroom doors.

The teachers are optimistic about the potential of the mobile device. They believe the iPad will help not only the student but it will also be of  great value to their whole family.

“As you know, kids love their cell phones, their tablets and all of their digital-age technology. Actually, they’re better with these devices than we all are, so i know that our new tools will keep their attention and keep them engaged,” says Faythe Allen. “Additionally, as we help ourselves to learn through our virtual training from Verizon, we will be able to turn knowledge around and pass it on to our students.”
