5 Back-to-School Safety Tips
#1. Contact Information
Having your child learn their contact information is very important. They should know the basics like name, address, parent’s name, phone number, and even an emergency contact. You should also be very clear with your kids about whom they should give this information out to. This is a special tip for parents. Always put your child’s name on the inside of clothing. The last thing you want to do is see a stranger taking advantage of the fact your child has their name on the outside of their belongings.
#2. Get Involved
It’s important, as a parent, that you get involved in your child’s school life. When you see the people your child is around every day, this can help ease your mind. Knowing each and every adult that will be around your child is an irreplaceable part of being involved in your child’s education. You don’t need to be over zealous about it, but you can never be too safe when it comes to your children.
#3. School Bus & Car Safety Rules
Whether your child rides the bus or you drop them off at school, it’s important to talk about transportation safety rules. Your child should know not to walk out into a road without double checking for cars. They should also know the general protocol for getting dropped off and picked up. Also give them an after school protocol, who is allow to pick them up? Make sure the school is also aware of the protocol.
#4. Emergency Preparedness
We live in a day and age where your child can never be too prepared for emergencies. Take the time to talk to your child about natural disasters and disasters brought on by people. Talking to your child about these issues is about helping them to prepare for anything that may come their way. You should do this in a way that doesn’t panic them, but helps them to feel prepared. Most importantly, make sure your child knows how the school also handles emergencies. It wouldn’t hurt to equip yourself with this information as well.
#5. Communication is Important
This last safety tip is for the whole family. One way to keep everyone safe this school year is to talk about the important stuff. Role-play different situations and talk about what to do in when faced with certain situations. At the end of the day, spend a few minutes talking to your child about their day, who they encounter etc.
