4 Ways I’m Learning to Be a Better Parent

It’s hard to believe but I’ve been a mom going on 9 years and I’m still a work in progress.  Parenting is tough enough and no child is the same; while one of your kids might be soft-spoken and gentle, another might be rambunctious and easily excitable.  It’s is a never-ending cycle and one we can achieve together.

4 Ways to Be a Better Parent
4 Ways I'm Learning to Be a Better Parent

  1. Listen to what your child has to say
I am not judging but do you tend to tune out what your child says?  Yes, kids tend to have a lot to say. I’m trying my best to listen to what my girls has to say. Even when they’re sharing the same joke, they’ve shared countless times over. I’ve noticed that when I pay attention to the little things, as they get older, they will feel comfortable coming to me with the bigger challenges that they might be facing.
  2. Remember that nobody is perfect
We all make mistakes as parent, and that’s okay. The key is to learn from your mistake and not dwell on it. So shutdown your inner critic and instead remember the areas of parenting that you excel in, let that be the catalyst to help you improve.
  3. Have fun with your kids
Turn off all distractions and simply have fun with your child. They’re only young once, so make the most of these precious few years. I am letting go of my inhibition and embracing my inner child. If that means, dressing up as Princess Leia while singing off-key at the top of my lungs, so be it.
  4. Resist the urge to compare and judge
Theodore Roosevelt said it best, “Comparison Is the Thief of Joy”. No family is the same, so it can be incredibly damaging to your relationship if you compare your family to others. We all have our own way of parenting but the bottom line is, we all love our kids. So from attachment parenting to free range parenting, working moms to stay-at-home moms, there is a common denominator and that’s LOVE and our desire to raise happy and healthy children.
