3 Critical Goals To Tackle This Summer

Since we’re half way though the year, I figured what better time than now  to breath some life back into my family’s initial 2013 resolution. Summer time is perfect because I have almost 3 months to reprogram our habits in hopes that by September we would be well on our way to being a healthier and happier family. So besides our regular summer activities of trips to the beach, Amusement park, Fireworks, Carnival Fun, Bowling, Berry Picking, Family Movie Night, Backyard BBQ, Backyard Water Play, etc I created 3 critical Goals I want us to accomplish as a family before the kids head back to school in September.

  1. Family Dinner – Having a nightly family dinner has been on my to do list since the beginning of time and I have failed at every attempt. I am praying  this is the summer I finally get it right. Studies have shown the importance of having dinner together as a family. Kids who sit down every night and eat with their family do better in school and they live a healthier and happier life compared to the ones that don’t. I know it wont be easy but i am hoping since our summer schedule isn’t as rigid this will be a good time to give it another shot.
  2. Volunteer – Doing Good Together – I’m involve with a few organization but none are geared towards kids, and I’ve always wanted my 6 year old daughter to be involve in giving back to her community. Yes she does the yearly, clothes and toy drive but I want something more. So this summer she will join me as we visit our local nursing home, she can help out by reading to them, assisting them with their arts and craft or just hanging out with them.
  3. Summer Reading Program – My 6 year old is heading to 2nd grade come September and we’ve gotten a glimpse of what her work load will be for the year and it wont be easy. So she’s getting a head start by incorporating chapter books into her reading regime. I also signed her up for two reading program – one through her school and another one through our local library. I’m joining her on this journey,  I guess you can say i’m leading by example.

We’ve already started the family dinner and the summer reading program hoping to begin the volunteer work soon.   I would love to hear what you’re doing with the family. Do you have any goals you wish to accomplish as a family? Whats on your summer bucket list?
