10 Fire Safety Tips That Could Save Your Life

Its Fire Prevention Week, October 6-12 and as luck would have it my daughter was invited to a birthday party at the firehouse this past weekend, so I got a chance to learn about the importance of fire safety and prevention.

Here are 10 Fire Safety Tips That Could Save Your Life
  1. TEACH the kids the importance of fire safety, according to USFA children make up 15% to 20% of all fire deaths
  2. CREATE an escape plan in case of fire and make sure everyone is fully aware of what the plan is. If possible do a trial run every couple of months. While 71% of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, only 47% of those have practiced it – Source: NFPA
  3. SELECT a designated meeting place outside of the house in case there is a fire, preferable a few feet away from the house – maybe by the tree, at the end of the driveway, at the mailbox, or even the neighbors house
  4. INSTALL smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement
  5. KEEP the door closed while sleeping, by closing your bedroom door it keeps the smoke out if there is a fire
  6. TOUR your local firehouse with the kids and let them meet a fireman up-close preferably while in full gear – face mask and all. Explain to the kids that a fireman might come into the house to help while in full gear and its okay, they shouldn’t be sacred, run or hide he or she is there to help
  7. BE ALERT especially when cooking, it might seem obvious but  accordingly to the National Fire Protection Association, the leading cause of home fires is unattended cooking
  8. KID-FREE ZONE – Have a “kid-free zone” of at  least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried
  9. GET OUT AND STAY OUT – If the smoke alarm goes off, get out of the house as quickly as possible and don’t ever go back
  10. SCHEDULE  a free safety assessment visit by calling your local fire department
