Support Your Child’s Interest in Reading with Technology

Is your child obsessed with reading? Of course, she is, and it’s a good problem to have. Reading is an important skill to have and a love of reading beats the alternative. If your child enjoys reading for pleasure, help support and encourage their interest by implementing a few technology into their repertoire. Reading helps kids become a better writer, a good speaker and it expands their world.  And if your child is a reluctant reader, you can help her become an avid reader.  So how do you support your child interest in reading with technology? By creating a good literacy habit and with March being National Reading Month, there is no better time than now to start. So whether your child is an avid reader or hates picking up a book, these tips will help make reading fun. Here are ways you can support your child’s interest in reading by using technology.

Support Your Child Interest in Reading with Technology

  1. Help set goals and keep track –  Encourage your child to keep track of the books she is reading and has read with apps like reader tracker and shelves. This will give your child a sense of accomplishment by setting goals and keeping records of the books read. It will also show how much they’ve advanced and how their style/taste has as evolved as the years goes by. You can also track your child’s progress with this digital bookmark and tracker.
  2. Explore being an author. To truly immerse your child in reading, help them in writing their own book online. It could be as easy as a picture or comic book or as complex as a chapter book. Writing a book will give your child a sense of accomplishment, and it would also help in building writing skills. Or they can start by creating a storybook about their summer vacation. Or you can find a young author program in your local community. For us, we signed our girls up for a program through their school. They had fun working on their books, and now our 10 years old refers to herself as an author.
  3. Give them unlimited access to books – If your little one enjoys reading then, she would love having unlimited access to a library of books.  With our Verizon Fios internet, we can download as many books as we see fit every month using our subscription to  Amazon FreeTime Unlimited.
  4. Remember to have fun – This is supposed to be a fun and easy way to encourage your avid reader while incorporating technology, so don’t forget to add some reading games and maybe a fun reading challenge.
