9 Things You Need to Do Before You Send Your Child Back to School

I can’t believe summer is almost over. It feels like just yesterday we were making plans on what to do to keep the kids engaged during the long break and now we’re getting ready to send them back to school. I hope you’ve enjoyed their time at home and made some memories you would cherish forever. We’ve compiled  a check list to help you and your little ones get ready for the upcoming school year.

  1. Schedule a dental checkup  – Take your child to the dentist for a cleaning and regular checkup, we go twice a year, the beginning of the year and mid year – coincidentally its before school starts. Good oral health is essential, educating your child about the importance of brushing twice a day and flossing helps with overall health.
  2. Schedule a wellness checkup – If your child will be playing sports, then this is a good time to take him or her for a physical exam, most sports will require that the child pass a physical health exam before being admitted. Is your child’s immunization up to date? If you’re switching schools then this will be required. Does your child have any sport restriction, don’t forget to get a note from the doctor excusing your child from playing sport.
  3. Back to school shopping – If you’re anything like me, then you’ve probably started looking online or at your local stores for sales on back to school supplies and clothes. Hopefully the school provided you with a list of school supplies for your child’s grade – if not call and ask the school or teacher for a preferred school supplies list. Have the kids try on their school uniform, you might need to buy new ones, and don’t forget school shoes, gym clothes/shoes, raincoats, and rain boots.
  4. Reestablish school night  routine – If your house is anything like mine, then your little ones have spent quite a few nights getting used to the relaxed night time routine. Well its time to get back on track – reintroduce school night bed time routine at least one or two weeks before they’re due to go back to school.
  5. Update family calendar – Check out the school website and familiarize your self with the academic calendar, this will help in planning out your schedule, so you’re well aware of early dismissal, parent-teacher conferences, extra curricula activities,  and upcoming school events.
  6. Create a meal plan  –  Plan ahead for breakfast and lunch. Start stocking up on non perishable items. Do your homework – check out the schools website to see what their lunch will be, plan to either make yours or order a meal plan. If you’re going to be making their lunch, don’t forget to purchase all the necessary accessories to help make the process easier on your – buy a bento lunch set, lunchbox notes and bookmark a few kid friendly lunch recipes to try.
  7. Arrange before and after-school care –  Figure out before and after-school care for your child – will you be home to drop him or her off in the morning? will someone be home in the afternoon when he or she gets off the bus?
  8. Reevaluate emergency plan – Every year we give the school a list of approved people that can pick up the kids in case of emergency, this is a good time to review the list and update it – make sure the people on the list are still interested in being listed as a point of contact.
  9. Communicate with your child  – Letting the kids know what to expect, will help ease the transition back to school. Review the plans for the upcoming school year – Will they be on a new bus route? Will there be a change in their before and after school care? All these information needs to be communicated ahead of time so there is no surprise or misinformation.

Do you’ve a back-to-school check list? What on there?
