5 Steps to Declutter Your Makeup Bag

When was the last time you declutter your makeup bag? That long eh. Nothing to feel guilty about, I’ve neglected this aspect of my beauty routine as well. I am not an everyday makeup girl, if you see my at the grocery store on a quiet Saturday morning, there is a fifty percent chance, I won’t have makeup on. When it comes to a beauty routine, I am a minimalist. For this reason, spring cleaning my makeup bag takes a back seat to everything else in my life. Yes, I try my best to clean my makeup brush, but I will be lying if I tell you I clean it weekly. And, that shouldn’t be the case. Even if you clean your makeup brush every day, you still have to sanitize and declutter your makeup bag to get rid of bacteria that could potentially accumulate over time. With that said, I’m challenging you to grab your makeup bag right now and let’s walk through the process together.

5 Steps to Declutter Your Makeup Bag

Declutter Your Makeup Bag

Step 1. Assess your storage.
Do you have the right makeup bag?  I started using a cute small bag, but as the year went out, I was bursting at the seams, so I upgraded to a slightly bigger and breathable bag to better accommodate my beauty needs. Plus, I picked a bag that can grow with me, as time changes and my needs changes.

Step 2. Inspect and Toss
Now that you’ve settled on the right cosmetic bag inspect your collection and decide what to keep and what to toss. Who are you fooling, that purple rain lipstick you bought two years ago doesn’t go with your complexion no matter how good it looked on Beyonce. Nope, you’re never wearing that HD powder, it makes you look crazy, so STOP. Oh, that’s just me. Well, let’s save ourselves the agony and toss it. Besides, all your makeup have a recommended use by date. Look on the bottle; some makeup has the time frame on there, for example, my bb cream has 12 M, but my liquid foundation has 24 M, my mascara has 6M, but I also have other products that don’t have the recommended time listed. However, as a rule of thumb, liquids makeup like concealer, serums, etc. should be tossed after 12 months, dry items like eyeshadow, powder foundation last a bit longer. Also, when your nail polish starts to separate and doesn’t mix easily, it might be time to toss it.

Step 3. Clean, Disinfect, and Sanitize
Since we’ve narrowed down the makeup we want, it’s time to clean, disinfect and sanitize your makeup. Hopefully, you’ve been cleaning your makeup brush every week like health professionals recommend. If you haven’t, it’s time to adopt a clean slate and create a routine that works for you. To cleanse clean my brush, I have a makeup cleaner and let it air dry but when I am in a pinch, I often use baby shampoo or liquid dish soap mixed with olive oil.

Step 4. Schedule Rotation
When you have a lot of makeup, you need to make a mental note to rotate weekly or monthly, that way; you get a chance to use everything you have before they expire.  Yes, your makeup has expiration dates that you need to adhere to for optimal quality.

Step 5. Stock up on New Favorites.
Now that we’ve gotten rid of all our old, expired and never used products. It’s time to invest in some new beauty must-haves. This time, commit to getting the minimum required to sustain you till your next purge.

That’s all, as you declutter your makeup, don’t forget to also spring clean your house.
