I took photography in college but back then my professor cared more about how well I could develop in the dark room than teaching me the basic element. Yes, I understand photography is an art form but some people could use some help, me being one of them. So I couldn’t be happier when I attended an event at the Samsung Galaxy Studio where Veteran National Geographic Photographer Ira Block shared 10 tips & tricks for taking better photographs while using the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. I’ve started incorporating some of his tips and I’ve seen some improvements.

10 Tips & Tricks For Taking Better Photographs

  1. Don’t look at your photos while shooting, you may miss a moment. Shoot a lot, use the continuous function and check out the images afterwards.
  2. If you have a good subject shoot it from different angles, and always get in close.
  3. Look for layers in your photos. Have something in the foreground, middle and background.
  4. Be careful of wide-angle scenics, everything will get very small. You need to have a large subject in the foreground to give better size perspective.
  5. Learn how your camera sees, it is different than your eyes and your brain.
  6. Use the grid-line function on the camera to aid in keeping the horizon and buildings straight.
  7. Don’t always center your image, especially people. A face in the middle of the frame gives you a photo that is half sky. Use the rule of thirds and position your subjects accordingly. You can then pick your focus point on the back of the screen.
  8. Use a small LED light to enhance your photos. Try to balance the LED light with the existing light in the room.
  9. For night shooting use a small tripod and voice command to fire the shutter.
  10. Use the Sports/Action mode when shooting kids or any action photos. It picks a high shutter speed which will stop movement.
