10 Children’s Books to Celebrate Black History Month. In celebration of Black History Month, we’re sharing awesome books you can read to the children and help teach them about African America history and pursuit of freedom. This is a collection of ten books dealing with various aspects of the African-American experience includes Henry’s Freedom Box, If a Bus Could Talk, The Story Of Ruby Bridges, and Freedom Summer and many more history defining moments. Sadly, I couldn’t locate a  picture book for children chronicling the efforts of Malcolm X, however The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a great read for teens.

  1. Child of the Civil Rights Movement — A daughter recounts the active role her father played in the civil rights movement.
  2. Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood up by Sitting Down – Picture book about four college student who staged a peaceful protest that became a defining moment in the struggle for racial equality and the growing civil rights movement.
  3. Our Children Can Soar: A Celebration of Rosa, Barack, and the Pioneers of Change – A poetic picture book with biography on African American pioneers like George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Jesse Owens, and many more.
  4. Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad  –  Easy read for kids, this picture book is about a young man’s upbringing into slavery and his escape to freedom through unconventional routine.
  5. Who Was Jackie Robinson? – A sport biography and an in-dept look at Jackie Robinson the first black baseball player’s  upbringing and his love for sport plus his journey to Brooklyn Dodgers.
  6. What was the underground Railroad – Picture book chronicling the slaves’ journey on the road to freedom. Stories about their struggles and triumph. Easy read for kindergarten and up.
  7. Freedom Summer – Chronicling the friendship between two young men living in the South in 1964 and their summer at the community pool right after the segregation law was passed. A look at prejudice in Mississippi.
  8. If a Bus Could Talk: The Story of Rosa Parks – The biography of African American and Civil Rights Rosa Park and the role she played in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
  9. The Story Of Ruby Bridges – Story of courage, faith, and hope in this inspirational book about six-year-old Ruby Bridges, a first grade student at William Frantz Elementary, an all-white school in New Orleans in 1960.
  10. Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt –  It’s an inspirational book about a young slave and seamstress who stitches a quilt with a map pattern to guide her to freedom.

Although not an obvious choice for black history month Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream is a fun read that teaches kids about confidence, perseverance and handwork.
